Health Benefits of Copper Bracelets

What Science Says

Health Benefits of Copper Bracelets: it is one of the most common questions we receive. Customers often write to ask whether our copper bracelets can ease hand, finger or joint pain, and whether our protective acrylic finish changes the “healing” properties of copper. Because we believe in complete transparency, here is an honest answer based on what the research actually shows.

At Copper Reflections, we have been handcrafting copper jewelry since 1985. We love copper for its warmth, beauty and history, and we want you to know exactly what you are buying.

Do Copper Bracelets Help With Joint Pain?

For generations, people have worn copper bracelets believing the metal can ease arthritis and joint stiffness. Many people tell us they feel better when they wear one.

However, scientific studies have not proven that wearing a copper bracelet treats arthritis or relieves joint pain. A personal experience can be real without proving that the copper caused the improvement.

What the Research Shows

Researchers at the University of York in England ran randomized, placebo-controlled trials, the gold standard of medical research, to test copper bracelets.

  • Rheumatoid arthritis (2013): A study published in PLOS ONE followed 70 people for five months. Each person wore four different wrist devices, including a copper bracelet. Researchers measured pain, inflammation, physical function and medication use. The copper bracelet showed no meaningful benefit beyond placebo.
  • Osteoarthritis (2009): An earlier York trial found copper bracelets were generally ineffective for pain, stiffness and physical function.

Why Do Some People Feel Better?

There are two well-known reasons:

  • The placebo effect: believing something will help can make you feel better. That feeling is real.
  • Natural ups and downs: people often start wearing a bracelet when their pain is at its worst. As symptoms naturally ease over time, the improvement is credited to the bracelet.

There is an important difference between “I feel better when I wear this” and “research has shown this treatment works.” The first is a personal experience. The second needs controlled scientific evidence.

Can Copper Be Absorbed Through the Skin?

When raw copper touches skin, it reacts with sweat and oils and can leave a harmless green mark. Some people believe this means copper is being absorbed into the body.

Lab research shows tiny amounts of copper compounds can enter the outermost layer of skin. But there is no evidence that a solid copper bracelet delivers meaningful amounts of copper to your joints or bloodstream.

Copper Is an Essential Mineral

Your body does need copper for normal functions such as making red blood cells, supporting the nervous and immune systems and building connective tissue. You get this copper from food such as nuts, seeds, whole grains, shellfish and dark chocolate. Wearing a copper bracelet does not add to your dietary copper in any meaningful way.

Real Copper vs. Look-Alike Bracelets

A genuine copper bracelet should be made from solid copper. At Copper Reflections, every bracelet starts as a solid sheet of 99.9% pure copper that we cut, shape and finish by hand.

Unfortunately, not every “copper” bracelet sold online is real copper. To cut costs, some mass-produced bracelets are cast from inexpensive alloy metals and then plated in a rose-gold or copper-colored finish so they look like copper. Some of these look-alike bracelets are even sold with health claims attached.

If you are shopping for a copper bracelet, look for:

  • A clear material statement: the seller should say the bracelet is solid copper, not “copper-tone,” “copper-colored” or “rose gold finish.”
  • Honest descriptions: be cautious of sellers who promise to cure arthritis or deliver instant pain relief.
  • A maker you can contact: a real workshop can tell you exactly how the bracelet is made.

Beware of Exaggerated Claims

Some sellers make bold promises that copper bracelets “cure” arthritis or give “instant pain relief.” The U.S. Federal Trade Commission has taken action against bracelet sellers who made unsupported health claims. You deserve honest information and authentic craftsmanship, not false promises.

Does Our Acrylic Finish Affect Copper’s Properties?

Yes, it changes one thing: our acrylic finish seals the copper, so raw copper does not touch your skin.

  • Uncoated copper: the metal touches your skin and can turn it green.
  • Copper Reflections jewelry: a clear acrylic layer separates the copper from your skin.

If you are looking specifically for bare copper-to-skin contact for traditional wellness reasons, our coated pieces will not provide that. We would rather tell you now than disappoint you later.

Why We Coat Our Copper Jewelry

We start with 99.9% pure copper sheets. Every piece then goes through our 32-step handmade process and is sealed with three to four coats of premium acrylic. This finish:

  • Prevents tarnishing and oxidation
  • Stops the green-skin reaction
  • Protects the colorful printed designs and diamond-cut sparkle
  • Means no polishing is ever needed

The finish is about protecting your jewelry and making it easy to wear, not about medicine. Learn more in our copper jewelry care guide.

Our View at Copper Reflections

We make beautiful copper jewelry. We do not claim that our jewelry can diagnose, treat, cure or prevent arthritis, joint pain, inflammation or any other medical condition. If you have ongoing joint pain, swelling or stiffness, please speak with your doctor. A copper bracelet should never replace medical treatment.

Our customers choose us because they love how our jewelry looks: handmade, colorful, adjustable and made to last.

Health Benefits of Copper Bracelets FAQs

What are the benefits of wearing a copper bracelet?

The main benefits of wearing a copper bracelet are its natural beauty, warmth and style. Some people also enjoy copper for traditional wellness reasons, but science has not proven that copper bracelets treat arthritis or joint pain.

Are copper bracelets proven to help arthritis?

No. Controlled clinical trials have not found a meaningful benefit from wearing copper bracelets for rheumatoid arthritis or osteoarthritis.

Can copper be absorbed through the skin from a bracelet?

Tiny amounts of copper compounds can enter the outer layer of skin, but there is no evidence that a bracelet delivers meaningful amounts of copper to the joints or bloodstream.

Does the acrylic finish affect the therapeutic properties of copper?

Our acrylic finish prevents raw copper from touching your skin. No therapeutic effect from copper skin contact has been scientifically established, so the finish is there to protect the jewelry, not to change any medical effect.

Are all copper bracelets made from real copper?

No. Some bracelets are cast from cheaper alloy metals and plated in a rose-gold or copper-colored finish. Ours are made from solid 99.9% pure copper sheets.

Why does raw copper turn skin green?

Raw copper reacts with sweat and skin oils and forms harmless copper salts. Our acrylic coating prevents this reaction.

Is your jewelry made from real copper?

Yes. We use 99.9% pure copper sheets, handcrafted in our own workshop.

Should I use a copper bracelet instead of medical treatment?

No. Always follow the advice of your doctor or a qualified healthcare professional.
